Every day, business professionals are overwhelmed by countless e-mails, links and websites. Often times, organizations competing for the same business use similar wording to describe their services. So how does a company stand out from the countless corporations all vying for the same business? The answer is undoubtedly branding that is both fresh and appealing. With websites, blogs, collateral and even business cards, companies should pursue a professional look that is immediately eye catching. Still skeptical about the importance of design? Today, I’d like to use resumes to prove my point.

Regardless of template or source, most resumes consist of a heading, objective, education summary, experience summary and list of technical expertise. But check out the immediate impact of these visually stunning resumes.

These resumes teach us that a professional design paired with creativity can really push a company from the middle to the front. In addition to creating a lasting impression, unique and appealing branding can also show off an organization’s company. And anytime a brand can make a prospect laugh or smile, chances are they’ve just earned a client.

So much so, that Search Engine Optimization has become a force of its own for businesses looking to gain more visibility on the World Wide Web. While small and large companies alike focus on metadata, link building, and keyword optimization, many are left to wonder just how much their efforts are paying off.

To help you assess whether your own website’s content is paying off or in need of improvement, here are several important website metric components, as outlined by the Colorado SEO Blog:

- Unique web pages indexed in Google Search Engine.
- Number of web pages viewed on your website daily.
- Keywords that delivered your search engine traffic.
- Referrers or sites that generated the inbound traffic.
- 404 errors for pages that can’t render in web browsers.
- Types of browsers people are using to find you such as Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
- Number of Incoming Links coming into your home page and internal web pages (They recommend the tool Majesticseo.com for Competitive Link Intelligence identification).
- In addition, pay attention to how many unique domains are linking to you from unique C-block servers.
-Word count or quantity of words per page, number of header tags, alt-tags, and images per web page.
- Text to Code Ratio.
- Most popular web page on your site with the most highly traveled site hits.
- Countries that generate traffic to you. Obviously you want traffic where you conduct sales and business operations.
- How many times to website visitors return to your website, and exactly how long is the average visit or stay?
- What is the bounce rate where people come to your site and leave immediately?
- How frequently is your site spidered, crawled, or visited by search engine spiders such as Google or the Microsoft/Bing spider?
- What is your exact Alexa rank?
- How do you compare with other Colorado SEO sites that have actively engaged in hiring Expert SEO Advice?
- Does your business website have diversified bookmarks in sites such as Delicious.com?

What are some metrics that your company utilizes to measure SEO success?

While a well crafted logo can bring about tremendous brand awareness when unaltered, sometimes a refresh can be a good thing. Often times, the key is to insert subtle changes while maintaining the overall look and feel.

Looking for a few sources of inspiration? The following list demonstrates three examples of famous logos that have successfully updated their look.

1.

Discovery Channel’s new design, which was crafted by Viewpoint Creative in Boston, provides a sleek and updated look with its switch from the Aurora Bold Condensed font to Gotham. The globe’s connection to the d in discovery completes a very nice overall look.

2.

While MTV’s logo makeover was minimal, the flexibility of the design’s message was increased. By dropping the ‘music television’ line and transforming the M into a blank canvas, MTV can focus more on the reality aspect of its programming as well as insert channel stars into the design, thereby helping the logo to continually evolve as fast as music does.

3.

It’s hard to ignore this powerhouse coffee shop Starbucks with a franchise on nearly every single corner. The old logo, which features a half nude siren framed by bland colors, was far from memorable. The updated look has ushered in a new era for the caffeine giant with a much more attractive mermaid in the center and an appealing green and black palette that pops.

What are some redesigns you’ve spotted that you’ve either loved or hated?

The other day, my co-worker Julie ran across a commercial promoting Roy Barnes for Governor. In the video, Roy was standing before Bistro Del Sol in the atrium of the Hartsfield-Jackson airport. We were both tickled by the sighting, as Sellier Design worked closely with our client HBF (Hojeij Branded Foods) to design the branding for Bistro Del Sol.

We did so first by studying restaurant concepts as well as unique materials in order to come up with a fresh and appealing overall look for the restaurant. Next we specified tile and paint colors. From there we designed the logo, packaging labels, wall art, and applied vinyl graphics throughout the space. We created all of the marketing materials including posters, brochures, PPT, and business cards. And finally, we worked with the architect to design the digital menu board. When I say we did everything, I mean we did everything! We even designed crew uniforms.

Since then, my team and I have worked with HBF on another concept with Abica Coffee in 2002 and have also enjoyed working with them in the retail space. Through our blood, sweat and tears we have created results of which we are very proud.

So the next time you have your TV on, if you happen to see Roy Barnes standing in the airport, take a closer look. From the logo to the wall colors and even the digital menu board, our passion lies in the details.

This weekend, families across the nation will be soaking up sun, packing picnics, and going gaga over fireworks. Sunday is the fourth of July, and in addition to inhaling apple pies, citizens throughout the U.S. will take time to celebrate the brave individuals who fought for our freedom.

In honor of this year’s festivities, here are 5 fabulous state tourism logos:

5.

Alabama’s state logo is both visually appealing and a crowd pleaser. Lynyrd Skynyrd reference? Yes please!

4.

With fun bold colors and a dynamic design, it’s no surprise why Georgia’s on our mind!

3.

Touché, Texas. Touché.

2.

Whether you’ve visited Virginia or not, there’s no doubt you’ve seen this well known logo on bumper stickers and t-shirts.

1.

Since the logo’s inception in the mid-70’s, this iconic design has become an American pop culture phenomenon. While there have been many knock offs throughout the years, I♥NY will always be the original. We love New York and we adore this logo.

From all of us here at Sellier Design, we’d like to wish you a happy and safe Fourth of July.

FIFA World Cup, the world’s most widely watched sporting event, originated in 1930 and is held every four years. With the emergence of each new tournament rotation (now in its 19th occurrence), a fresh logo is introduced to represent the host of that particular series.

This year’s World Cup logo showcases a colorful design that strongly embodies the spirit of South Africa’s land and people. The colors flawlessly represent both the logo of FIFA as well as the African flag. The logo’s figure, which is in the midst of kicking a ball, exhibits an exciting energy through its movement. And the lively typeface sprawled beneath the kicking figure emits a South African vibe. Altogether, these 3 elements lend a certain vibrancy to this year’s games.

There have been some fabulous past logos as well. Take for instance the very first logo for the 1930 games.

The 1934 World Cup Logo

The 1950 World Cup Logo

The 1986 World Cup Logo

And the future is looking bright as well! Check out the 2014 logo for the World Cup in Brazil.

There are two ingredients to a successful website: a cleverly crafted website design and a strong SEO strategy. While an attractive and intuitive site will help to keep customers and prospects on your site, search engine optimization is the tool that will draw these consumers to your page.

Keywords are a critical component of SEO because they are the words that define you. In order to assure that your company is visible to prospects and customers, it’s important to utilize all of the possible words and phrases that consumers might use for Google searches. Unsure of what keywords might work best for you? Here are a few tools to get you started:

Google Adwords Keyword Tool – Simply type in the subject you’re researching and Google’s keyword tool will suggest keywords and the monthly and annual search volumes for those terms. If you’re running a Pay Per Click campaign, this tool can also provide you with the cost per click.

Overture (Yahoo!) Keyword Tool – Yahoo’s keyword tool will also help you to predict the amount of traffic certain keywords will bring and lists monthly regional search volumes for the most popular search engines based on Overture search counts for different geographic markets. It also provides links to price estimate tools for Google Adwords.

Google Rankings Tool – If you’re curious about the strategy of your competitors, use the Google Rankings Tool to check how they rank with certain keywords. You can also use this tool to check your own SEO efforts.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Google algorithm is always changing. While metadata and pagerank might be important one day, both will be irrelevant the next. The one thing that Google will always value is helpful and well written content. Choose your keywords wisely, work on solid inbound and outbound links, and focus on quality content.

Any questions?

Now that we’ve gone through a quick SEO 101 lesson, let’s get a little more detailed. While the foundation of SEO is built upon solid, well thought out content, there are a few SEO boosters that can continue to increase a website’s rankings. Without further ado, here are 3 SEO sprinkles to top off your strategy.

Social bookmarks: Every great piece of content that you write should be shared. Sites such as digg, delicious, stumbleupon and even Twitter can help your articles to receive a lot of attention and maybe even go viral. These bookmarks provide link juice, traffic to your site and major credit to search engine.

Links: Search engines view links as referrals. If someone’s linking to you, that means they value your site and find your content to be worthwhile. Therefore, the more people that recommend you, the more comfortable search engines feel recommending you also. On a similar note, by adding helpful links to your own content, you’re showing search engines that you care about providing useful information to your readers and that your site is worth visiting. And by linking to others, they might be flattered and feel inclined to link back to you, which is a huge SEO boost.

Tags and Categories: Behind every good piece of content is solid metadata and rich keywords. In addition to utilizing keywords in your anchor links, adding keywords as tags and categories will really punctuate the words you’ve selected to define you. To hone in on what keywords will benefit you the most, check out Google’s keyword tool.
